Sounds of the Beacon

Students have launched their own web-based radio station, following an idea from the LRC manager, Ms Lewin, in September.

Mr B Fritsch, from Sound Space, who has vast experiences in setting up school radio stations, has teamed up with Ms Lewin, taking on the role of Project Manager.

Ms Lewin selected 15 candidates from 60 students who initially applied to be involved. Such a small number of students were used to ensure their serious interest in the work to be carried out.

Students worked together selecting a name for their radio station and one lucky student’s suggestion was chosen –

“Sounds of the Beacon”

The logo of the station is now to be decided and the selected student will get the opportunity to go to a Cumbria University campus to see their work being made into the group logo.

Working along side the students every Wednesday until May are two mentors, Sam Olly, who is a camera and radio technician, and Kim Boak, who is a journalism student working from Radio Cumbria.

The project won a bid, meaning it will be funded from the Outreach Program which is funded by Creative Partnerships, Aim Higher and the University of Cumbria.

Following six months of preparation, the college’s station then obtained industry standard equipment for radio stations. The equipment encouraged the students even more, driving them to launch the station as soon as possible.

The Sounds of the Beacon radio station, which is based in the Leaning Resource Centre, is in its infancy stages. When developed further, it will be more than able to promote the Learning Resource Centre events calendar. It is being used to link curriculum events between schools.

The aim of the radio station is to “engage learners through a creative, fun and collaborative way to meet key curricular objectives”.

The first podcast was an enlightened interview with Melvin Burgess, who is an award-winning teenage author. Other podcasts highlighted Sports Relief, where the radio team interviewed Carlisle United football captain – Paul Thirlwell and Gretna player Paul Murray, and an interview with our successful Mock Trial Team.

All podcasts will be accessible soon from this page, so keep checking the site and have a listen!

Please be patient as the pocasts can take a little time to load.
